One of the facets of Harvest Workroom that we most love is our ever changing list of artists-in-residence and special guests. Guest artists/makers from all over the world are invited to teach workshops in their area of expertise at Harvest Workroom to engage the Melbourne community in making and creating in unique face-to-face situations with talented people from diverse fields.
We also like to share our studio with artists and offer informal residencies to people who inspire us. We hope they inspire you too!

Lucas Grogan moves in to our studio for 6 weeks on March 1st 2013 and plans to create a screen printed and hand embroidered quilt as one of nine quilts that he will then show at Gallery Smith in August 2013.
We will teach him all there is to know about screenprinting and then sit back and watch as he combines his new skills with his intricate needle work.

Whilst at the studio he will host a workshop called Phrase it Write in which students will follow in the manner of his text-based work by using an ambiguous phrase to create a beautiful drawing on archival matte board.

From 3rd December they will move into Harvest and set up an exhibition / open studio / pop up Shop called Intergalactic Garden. The theme will explore the ideas of interplanetary colour, plants, the wonder of space, cosmic beams, astronauts, cacti, solar systems and plants all side by side in an intergalactic garden of fun.

(please email Peaches and Keen for enquiries)

As part of their stay they will continue on with the overhaul of the Harvest Workoom garden. Yippee-dee-doo-dah - a little oasis for us to escape to at the end of a long day in the print room!

Our November artists-in-residence are the inimitable local duo Miso and Ghostpatrol.
They have all sorts of fantastic plans for their residency that will be revealed over the course of the month on our blog (including a top secret garden project and some textile printing projects) and will host an open studio Thursday - Sunday from 12pm - 5pm (except November 10th and 11th) at Harvest Workroom where they will be working away on current projects. They will also have a small exhibition and some of their prints and books available for sale.
If you would like to spend a day with Ghostpatrol and a small group of students as he unlocks the secret of his sketch books and the role they play in his work you may wish to join The Black Book Sessions workshop. As he says "it all starts in my sketchbook."

Our October 2013 artist-in-residence is contemporary artist and passionate Pacific Island weaver - Maryann Talia Pau. For Maryann, weaving is a profound symbol of innovation and maintaining cultural connections in an urban Australian context.
'Turn me On' is Maryann's first solo residency and second body of new work since her solo 'Fashioning the Mana' at NGV International in 2010. A timely opportunity to practise, reflect and play with materials and language, 'Turn me On' is a chance to look into Maryann's process of activating new and old materials and weaving them into beautiful works that can either adorn the human body or our building spaces. It's up to you!! There are no rules, what ever 'turns you on.'

Maryann will be working/playing in the studio for most of her residency but will open to the public from 12pm - 5pm at 512 Lygon Street, East Brunswick Fridays and Saturdays 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th & 26th October. She will also host a workshop in Basket Weaving at Harvest Workroom on October 27th. Bookings here.

We are giving you ample warning - put September aside for a shibori silk session with pattern doyenne Joanna Fowles. She will be joining us for an artist's residency from September 17th-23rd and host a one day shibori silk scarf workshop while she is here that is already poised to sell out.

During her residency she plans to continue in her process led approach to textiles with an exploration of dye, mark making and screen printing: combining these techniques onto fabric to make scarves and to develop a collection of collaged prints.
Jo is a British born Sydney based textile designer and digital crafter. Her work is primarily process driven with a focus on hand elements and mixed media. With a playful approach she experiments with large-scale mark making, wood, paint, dye, shibori, photography and screen-printing techniques to produce abstract geometric digital craft designs.
Can't wait to see what she comes up with!

Lucky us. We get to spend the last two weeks of March with the ethereal Dell Stewart as our artist-in-residence. Dell has chosen to spend her time at Harvest Workroom working on printing for both a handmade book and an animation. Both will feature collages of
found objects and hand printed paper. Dell plans to have the animation set up in the window for passers by and will add to it as her residency progresses.

She will also be one of the super talented artitst presenting workshops for our 4 day school holiday program - Design Depot - in early April where she will host an animation workshop. Book in fast for that particular workshop as it is going to be popular.

We are very pleased that one of our ex-students Kirra Jamison will spend the next three weeks at Harvest Workroom as artist-in-residence preparing a new body of screen printed works on paper.

For anyone not familar with the prolific talents of Kirra be sure to pop over to her website and her great new food blog that we can't stop salivating over called Keke.

Kirra attended our 9 week Screen Printing Intensive workshops last year in order to attain the knowledge to transfer her artistic talents onto mesh!
We can't wait to see what she comes up with during her time with us.

Stay tuned to our blog and facebook to see her work unfold.

Our January 2012 designer-in-residence Clara Vuletich (UK based Australian textile designer, Bricolage Project member and researcher at Textiles Environment Design) has arrived in Melbourne.
The residency will explore the concept of 'local textiles’. Clara hopes to combine her knowledge of sustainable textile print and dye processes with her interest in new forms of design and community activity that promote ‘home-grown’ knowledge/skills and encourage well-being.
Clara will document her residency with daily blog updates and host Local Cloth - a presentation of her residency findings on Saturday January 21st from 10.30am - 12pm to be held at Harvest Workroom, 512 Lygon Street, East Brunswick. She is a charismatic speaker with a great depth of information and enthusiasm for her subject (as her seminar last year attests). An event not to be missed.
Bookings here - only $15.

We are looking forward to having the super duper dynamic duo Nick Young (of Two Ruffians) and Clair Wayman with us as artists-in-residence at Harvest Workroom during November.

Not only do these guys make us laugh (a lot) they are also really talented folk who will inject our studio with a whole lot of sass and style.

Between them they wear so many hats but essentially Clair is a highly sought after stylist and Nick is her printmaking partner in crime and when they come together they are Curio & Curio. They have a sweet little shop down in Flinders under that very name which they will essentially be relocating for their popup appearance.

Whilst under our roof Nick will lead an uber-DIY workshop (with Clair as his sidekick) called Printed Wooden Storage Box - Printing and Constructing (see an example of the cube over to the far left.)

More details to come about their residency but be sure to book in to the workshop if you are keen - we don't want you missing out.

Read an interview with Nick on our blog.

If you haven't heard of Monolog then now is the time to sit up and listen. As one of Melbourne's most innovative new fashion/textile labels we at Harvest Workroom are well and truly looking forward to having them move into our space from September 2 -10. Monolog will use the opportunity to present the fresh new colours and styles that have been handprinted by Indie Ladan - the face behind the label - right here on our ten metre print table at Harvest Workroom.

Whilst under our roof we will help Monolog celebrate the official launch of their new spring collection on September 2nd 7pm - 9.30pm. Punters will have the opportunity to meet Indie Ladan as well as receive 10% off any purchases made on the night and go in the running to win five limited edition garments.
Monolog will then have a popup shop 3rd-4th September and 7th-10th September from 10.30am-5pm.

From our perspective one of the most exciting aspects of the Monolog mayhem will be the workshop that Indie will host called One Piece. Under Indie's guidance students will design their own bold flowing graphics that will then be exposed onto screens and printed on organic cotton jersey. The japanese technique of Furoshiki will provide much of the inspiration for the course.
Find out more about Monolog and the workshop through an interview we did with Indie at our blog.

The very talented Nikki Gabriel will join us as part of our makeUp @ Harvest Workroom program in July featuring designers that use recycled or upcycled materials in their work. Nikki will use her time with us to launch her WOOLI yarn - a stunning product made of remnant fibres of CASHMERE, SILK,  WOOL, ALPACA and POSSUM.  It’s mixed up and spun into this amazing heather yarn that has a bulky tweed look...absolutely beautiful.

Using her "construction knitting" approach Nikki will host workshops to show people how to use her patterns to design and make garments using simple knitted shapes rather than elaborate craft skills. Now that sounds like a winning combination.
Book here.

The month of May sees Emily Green shimmy into Harvest Workroom to bless it with her wonderful sense of colour and abstraction. From May 9th she will take over the window exhibition space at 512 Lygon Street, East Brunswick and fill it with her colourful trademark style.
